Almost all off-road SUVs promise comfortable passenger space, good towing ability, and satisfactory cargo hold, but not all of them successfully deliver.
Although it’s hard to pick just four off-road SUVs to crown as the best, we took that burden off your shoulders. We reviewed vehicles that do well on most levels, including off-road capability, cargo and passenger space, and quality interior.
1. 2021 Jeep Wrangler
Being one of the most recognizable SUVs for off-roading, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler is the smoothest and most efficient ride since the 2018 re-imagination of the classic Wrangler. Today, it’s available in both two-door and four-door configurations with a removable top for those who enjoy open-air driving. T
The two-door Wrangler comes in three trim levels; Sport, Sport S, and Rubicon, while the four-door is available in the Sahara trim.
Four-wheel drive and a 3.6L V6 engine are the standards for all wranglers, which you can get with either an eight-speed automatic or six-speed manual transmission. There are two available engines for the eight-speed automatic transmission: a turbocharged 2L four-cylinder and a 3L diesel V6.
For the best off-road magic, the Wrangler Rubicon trim is the go-to choice. A powerful 6.4L V8 engine is available only on this level, and it has a high ground clearance of about 11 inches, large, 33-inch all-terrain tires, and a 4:1 gear ratio. All of this, along with its short wheelbase, making it one of the best vehicles to handle rough terrains.
- Exceptional off-road abilities
- Removable top
- Comfortable interior
2. 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class
The 2020 Mercedes-Benz G-Class offers impressive off-road abilities at a just as impressively high price, but that’s no surprise from such a cultural icon.
The recently redesigned G-Wagen, short for the German Geländewagen, offers one of two forms of power; 416 hp/450 lb-ft in the G 550, and an astonishing 577 hp/627 lb-ft in the G 63, thanks to a 4L twin-turbo V8 engine.
For ultra-performance, both on- and off-road, an electronic adaptive suspension system is a standard on the G 63 and optional for the G 550.
It’s clear that innovative design was put into providing robust performance and refined interior. Yet still, the small cargo space and poor fuel economy hold this ride back from keeping up with the practicality expected from a G-Wagen.
- Powerful engines
- Immense capability off-road
- Sophisticated exterior
3. 2020 Land Rover Discovery
Although serious off-road capability is a given when it comes to Land Rover SUVs, the 2020 Land Rover Discovery adds appreciable on-road performance to give an overall gratifying experience on any road.
An eight-speed automatic transmission delivers power from one of two available powertrains; a turbocharged 3L diesel V6, with 254 hp/443 lb-ft of torque, and a supercharged 3L gasoline V6, with 340 hp/332 lb-ft of torque.
With sufficient cargo room, this ride proves to be as family-friendly as a Land Rover can be. It has standard seating for five, with an optional third-row that can seat two more passengers.
- Smart tech features
- Great off-road power
- Luxurious interior and cabin material
- Sweeping cargo space
4. 2020 Ford Expedition
Since the Ford Expedition was redesigned in 2018, it’s held a significant position when it comes to full-size SUVs. The 2020 Ford Expedition continues this streak with an added King Ranch trim.
Firstly, this model’s towing capabilities are off the charts, with a capacity of up to 9300 pounds. This capacity is significantly larger than that of similarly sized SUVs. With added rear-seat legroom and cargo space, this vehicle provides ample space for transporting families and towing heavy subjects simultaneously.
Secondly, a 3.5L twin-turbocharged V6 engine with 375 hp, or 400 hp available for the Platinum trim, delivers power through a ten-speed automatic transmission. A four-wheel-drive could replace the standard rear-wheel drive at any trim level.
Finally, although the Expedition is a good choice for those who need ample space and towing capabilities, it can be harder to use when navigating tight spaces due to its massive build.
- Comfortable passenger and cargo space
- Massive towing capability
- Powerful twin-turbo V6 engine
There you have it, the four best off-road SUVs. Each of these automobiles has something significant to offer on more than one level, so if you’re planning on choosing one of them, one thing you could do is sort out your priorities and determine which vehicle best serves them.
