What we love about ATVs is that you can take them anywhere. But, whatever you like to do once you’re out in your ATV, you’re going to want (if not need) an ATV basket to stash all your gear.
Sure the racks that come with the ATV can be great and all, but you have to strap everything down with a rack, and that’s a drag. But if you’re thinking of getting a basket rack instead, that’s smart. You don’t have to tie anything down unless you want to. And with their mesh sides even smaller items won’t slip or fall out.
So, with all that in mind, it might be worth getting yourself an ATV basket rack. There’s some really great ones out there. And don’t worry, you can either get yourself a deep rear basket rack where you can stash all your gear and forget about it til you get to your stop.
Or you can get a slightly more shallow rack that you can mount on the front of the ATV that won’t obscure your view of the land ahead.
But getting the perfect ATV basket rack can be tricky. It needs to be sturdy but not heavy. Easy to mount yet secure when mounted. And all without letting your gear fall out while going over rough or bumpy terrain.
We’ve been checking out a ton of the best ATV baskets out on the market today, and we’ve drawn up our top 5 to show you, and we’re going to review them for you very shortly. In these top 5 picks, we’ve got some rear ATV basket racks, and some front ones.
Then after that we’ve also got a handy buying guide, which quickly runs through everything you might want to think about before you buy.
We then follow that up with yet another hand section where we answer some of your most frequently asked questions.
Top 5 Best ATV Basket Racks
OUR TOP PICK
This is a great little ATV basket rack, from one of the bigger names in the business.
You can choose whether to mount it on the front or the rear of the ATV. We think rear would be best because it means the rack and whatever you want to stash in it, isn’t going to interfere with your view of the land.
It’s a very nice size, with a long length of 38 inches, a good width of 13 inches, and a really good height of 7.5 inches. It’s big enough to hold a tool box, or up to 3 5-gallon buckets.
The bottom of the rack, and the two largest panels are made up of a particularly fine mesh, which is great because it means nothing’s going to slide out and it won’t collect any rainwater on your journey. These mesh panels have a 1 inch thick steel framing around them.
The other two sides are a little more solid, which is great because if anything was going to fall out it would be via these two sides.
It has a good, solid, one-piece steel construction, and a powder coated finish.
All the mounting hardware you could need is included in the price, and there’s mounting instructions provided in the user manual which you can access via the Amazon page.
To see if it will fit your particular ATV, you just need to enter our vehicle details via the drop down boxes on the Amazon page.
- Great brand
- Plenty of room
- Particularly fine mesh
- Premium product at a premium price
Here’s another great ATV basket rack, and at a great price too.
What we love about this one is just how lightweight it is. It only weighs about 14 pounds. That’s not going to drag you down at all.
It’s a nice size, specifically 37.5 inches long, 13 inches wide, and 6 inches high. Big enough to carry quite a bit of stuff for you. Whether it’s camping gear or a GPS device or whatever.
It’s a good, solid and sturdy basket rack, made with hard to dent, heavy duty steel. But you shouldn’t expect any rust, because it’s got a black paint finish.
The bottom and side panels have a great mesh design to keep smaller items in place. Plus this mesh design is well suited for tying different items down if you need or want to.
You get all the necessary mounting hardware in the box when it arrives, all included in the price. And mounting it is easy, just follow the instructions available from the PDF of the user manual, which is right on the Amazon page.
- Great price point
- Very lightweight
- For front of ATV only
Another great ATV rack from top brand Koplin.
What we love about it is not just how big it is, but also how secure it is too.
It’s 38 inches long, which is good, whereas its width is 27 inches, but only 13 inches of this is for the basket part, while the remaining width is more of a flat shelf just above the basket.
So the basket itself is pretty roomy, able to hold up to 3 5-gallon buckets. So you’ve got plenty of room for all the gear or tools you want to take with you.
Better yet it’s up to you how you want to use the basket. You can use it on it’s own on the front of the ATV, or position it on the back of the ATV, with the shelf I mentioned either dropped or raised.
Such a versatile piece of kit. It’s like 3 racks for the price of one. The photos on the Amazon page best depict what I mean.
The basket and the shelf won’t collect too much dirt or rainwater, thanks to the mesh design which makes up most of the panels.
It’s a universal fit, but if you want to be sure it will fit, you can just use the plug in software right there ready for you on the Amazon page. All the mounting hardware you need comes included in the price.
It is more expensive than a lot of the other similar racks out there, but you’re paying for the brand.
- Great brand
- Basket plus shelf
- Front or rear positioning
- It’s a bit heavier than the other basket racks that made our top 5 picks
- This can be an expensive rack, but Amazon has be known to offer great deals on it occasionally
This is a great ATV basket rack from Goplus.
And it provides loads of room for all your gear. The most room of all the racks we’ve shown you in fact.
It’s a whopping 41 inches long, 14 inches high and 12.6 inches wide. You could store loads of gear on there, whether it’s tools, lawn feed, or camping gear.
The basket has a dense mesh all around, so you don’t have to worry about smaller items falling out. And it won’t collect any rain water or dirt. The mesh panels come in really handy when you want to tie items down or secure them in place.
It’s a good, solid basket rack, made of heavy duty steel - designed to be durable, then there’s a black powder coated finish, which helps to ensure that you won’t run into any damage caused by rust or corrosion.
And if something were to slip, it would almost certainly just roll forward onto the included shelf which is positioned over the ATV itself.
It’s easy to mount onto the ATV. It has a universal design, which means it should fit onto most ATVs (or even UTVs). All the mounting hardware you could need all comes in included when the box arrives.
- Very long length & height
- Cargo won’t fall off
- Not so many peer reviews around on this one unfortunately (but customer feedback has been very positive)
This is a great basket rack for the front of the ATV. And it will fit most ATVs because it’s a universal one. Great if you want to just grab something quickly.
And there’s plenty of space in it. It measures 36 inches along the length, then it’s 17 inches wide, and a full 5 inches deep. Great for stashing camping gear, fishing equipment, or whatever you happen to be into.
It has a fine mesh bottom and on all four sides, so you don’t have to worry about anything falling out or through, and it won’t collect any rain water either, rain will just drip straight through.
It’s a tough number, strong and durable thanks to it’s heavy duty steel construction.
But at the same time it’s not too heavy, and won’t put any demands on the ATV’s engine.
And then it has a black powder coated finish, which does an excellent job of protecting the rack from rust and corrosion, and that’s what really makes it so durable.
There’s no fiddly assembly to worry about, the rack comes with all the hardware already assembled before being shipped out to you. Plus it’s super easy to mount onto the ATV, honestly only takes about a minute.
- Universal - should fit most ATVs
- Protected from rust & corrosion
- Some customers complained the coating is too thin
Best ATV Basket Racks Buying Guide
Here’s everything you need to think about before you buy.
This is the most important thing you need to think about. Whether it’s big enough to accommodate everything you want to take with you. That’s why in our reviews earlier we gave you the dimensions of each basket rack.
We’re not saying you need to measure everything you want to take or everything you expect to take back, but there’s no harm in getting a tape measure out so you can picture how much space you’ll have in the rack you’re looking at, so you can gauge whether it can fit all your gear.
Front vs Rear Storage
Most ATV basket racks are designed for the rear of the ATV. Which makes sense because having too much stuff stored at the front of the ATV will obscure your view when you’re driving.
That said it can be convenient for someone in a front seat to be able to keep tabs on the gear, or grab something quickly if it’s safe to do so. If you needed to keep a GPS device with you for example, you don’t want to have to unpack all your gear to try and find it. If you stash it in the front rack, you can see exactly where it is.
Other than positioning, the other stand out difference between front and rear basket racks is that rear racks tend to be deeper, and thus are able to carry more gear, or more bulky gear.
If you have a lot of stuff you want to take with you, or bring back with you, then you could consider getting a front and rear ATV basket combo. But the drawback to that is a considerable increase in price. Only you can decide if you need both or if it would be too expensive.
You’ll be expected to mount the rack yourself. So if you haven’t done this before, you’ll be looking for one that’s relatively easy to mount.
Once the rack is then mounted, you’ll need it to remain securely in place, no matter how rough the terrain you go over.
Ideally you want the rack to be so secure that it won’t rattle or vibrate, or worse still, fall off.
You’ll also want your gear to be kept secure too. That means the walls of the rack should be sufficiently high. Higher than at least the halfway point of the height of your gear, to prevent anything from falling out.
We would recommend that you go for a basket rack with a mesh bottom and mesh walls rather than bars, as this should help prevent smaller items from sliding out.
The reason we say mesh, rather something more solid is because you don’t want it collect too much rain water if you can help it.
You don’t have to rely solely on the basket rack for this though, you can also buy special strapping mechanisms that you buy separately.
As much as you want your ATV basket rack to be sturdy and durable, you don’t want it to be too heavy, or else it will weigh the ATV down more than necessary for the drive.
For those who aren’t so familiar with ATV rack brands, there are one or two big players out there that are more well known and trusted in ATV circles, and we included a few of the main ones in our top 5 picks. They are Koplin, Goplus, and Rage Powersports.
No one wants to spend loads of money on a simple ATV rack, or at least no more money than they have to. Especially when there are so many other ATV accessories you might be thinking of getting.
Unfortunately though, they can be quite expensive, usually costing more than $100 a time. However, you can rest assured that all of the ATV basket racks in our top 5 picks are all good value for money.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if a basket rack is going to fit my ATV?
If an ATV basket rack is labelled as “universal” then it should fit most ATVs.
If not however, you should consider buying your ATV basket rack through Amazon, since they often have a checker near the top of the Amazon product page where you select the model etc of the ATV, and it will tell you if the rack is compatible and will fit.
What are ATV racks made from?
ATV racks are made of metals such as steel or aluminum. They often have special coatings to protect them from rust and corrosion.
How to paint ATV racks?
Painting your ATV rack is a good way of reconditioning it to protect it against rust or corrosion. Check out this YouTube video for how: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzyT74YlgRE. Apparently it can be done in just 15 minutes which is good to know. You can always check out the forums too for more tips.
Of course, you could always save yourself the need to paint it all by making sure you get yourself an ATV basket rack that already has a special finish to make it resistant to rust and corrosion, like the two Goplus racks we showed you earlier (just scroll back up a bit).
How to clean ATV racks?
You can actually clean your ATV basket racks the way you clean the rest of the ATV, with the same products. But if you want to make your ATV rack shine, check out this link: https://www.polarisatvforums.com/threads/how-to-make-your-atv-plastics-shine.66738/
